Tinker Air Force Base and The Boeing Co. share a long history, and the future remains bright as the aerospace giant continues to add to its presence at the base.

Tinker's largest contractor is also one of its largest civilian employers. Boeing's decision to make Oklahoma its headquarters of the company's Aircraft Modernization and Sustainment division also will add jobs in coming years.

Boeing has more than 2,500 employees in Oklahoma, with most of them at Tinker. The company also has more than 5,100 retirees in the state.

Last summer, Boeing finished an $80 million facility to house its engineering and research and development labs. The 300,000-square-foot building will expand Boeing's ability to maintain and upgrade existing military aircraft.

Boeing has been formally involved with Tinker since 1953, when the base started preparing to be the depot for the B-52 bomber, said Dan Ruder, Boeing's manager for Bomber Advanced Programs. Before that, employees at Tinker had worked briefly on other Boeing bombers, the B-29 and the B-47.
