Oklahoma City mayor urges transit funding to prevent gridlock

With its population growing, Oklahoma City faces a public transit dilemma.

As Mayor David Holt describes it: fund public transit now or prepare for miles of gridlock traffic fading off into the horizon.

During his eighth State of the City address on Wednesday, Holt said that without a permanent, dedicated funding stream, the city’s rapid population growth will cause the kind of traffic buildup seen in other cities across the U.S.

“They’ll say, ‘This city reminds me of Nashville and Austin 20 years ago,'” Holt said. “Nashville and Austin are known nationally as two cities that suddenly burst onto the global stage and I don’t disagree that we are living through that kind of elevation in OKC right now.”
