Oklahoma City CVB Generates $414 million in Direct Spending for OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY, Aug. 31, 2010- The Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) wrapped up its 2010 Fiscal Year successfully, with a total of 378,377 room nights booked for the year, 7 percent more than their original goal. These sales efforts will lead to more than $414 million in direct spending by future conventions, meetings, group tours, sporting events and equine events. This equates to a return on investment for Oklahoma City of 114:1 – every dollar spent in the CVB’s budget will generate $114 in future direct spending for Oklahoma City.

The hard work and dedication of the CVB team also resulted in receiving Oklahoma’s highest tourism award, the RedBud, as the Oklahoma Tourism Organization of the Year.

“Our team works hard year-round to promote Oklahoma City as an outstanding destination for conventions, meetings, tours and events,” said Mike Carrier, president of the Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau. “I am thrilled our hard work has paid off, but I am even more thrilled with the type of economic activity these bookings will bring to Oklahoma City.”

Convention/Sports Sales Results
The CVB Convention and Sports Sales staff booked 208 conventions, meetings and sports events (3 percent increase) representing 191,582 future room nights (9 percent increase). Future bookings include the 2011 Pentecostal Conference of the North American Keralites (4,500 attendance; 1,500 room nights); 2012 Pre-Paid Legal Services International Convention (12,000 attendance; 13,905 room nights); and the 2013 National Square Dance Association Annual Convention (6,000 attendance; 5,460 room nights).

The CVB Sales team conducted 34 site visits with potential decision makers and secured a 3 percent increase in future bookings. The CVB provided servicing assistance for 328 groups during the year and achieved an 88.2 percent customer satisfaction rating.

Tourism Sales Results
CVB Tourism staff attendance at eight trade, three group and ten consumer shows resulted in 666 tour groups booked to visit Oklahoma City – an 80 percent increase over the previous year. These tour groups brought 28,014 passengers resulting in 5,945 room nights during FY 2010.

Marquee Event Development Results
Marquee Event staff is focused on equine and agricultural events that stimulate economic activity for Oklahoma City. Work is currently underway with State Fair Park officials to secure the renewal of several contracts for long-term clients to continue to protect the significant brand Oklahoma City holds as “The Horse Show Capital of the World.” The economic impact for Oklahoma City in the arena of equine and agricultural events is tremendous, producing more than $171 million in direct spending for the local community.
