The Journal Record
Oklahoma City’s sports tourism strategy has evolved from hosting occasional weekend events to becoming a steady contributor to our region’s economic growth. This spring made that shift clear: over 11 weekends, Oklahoma City hosted nine citywide sports events, creating a near-continuous cycle of visitor activity that filled hotel rooms, supported restaurants and brought new spending into our community.
Once viewed as an emerging sports destination, Oklahoma City now regularly competes for national championship events, international competitions and multiweek tournaments. Over the past three years, Visit OKC-supported sporting events have contributed to a 36.2 percent increase in direct economic impact, along with a 25 percent surge in sports-related hotel bookings.
While these figures reflect recent acceleration, the foundation behind them has been decades in the making. Equine events have long been among the city’s most consistent hotel drivers, anchored by world-class infrastructure at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. Recognized as the Horse Show Capital of the World, Oklahoma City hosts more national and international equine championships than any other city.
Central to this sports tourism push is the legacy of our MAPS program, which continues to turn local venues into massive draws for both residents and visitors. Devon Park and RIVERSPORT help secure recurring national and international competitions, including the NCAA Women’s College World Series, drawing more than 105,000 fans and $25 million in annual local impact.
