On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and Greater Oklahoma City Chamber Chairman David Thompson announced the formation of the "YES for MAPS Coalition". This coalition will campaign in support of the upcoming MAPS 3 initiative, to be voted on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
"The MAPS programs have been heralded as some of the most innovative and successful economic development tools ever deployed by a single city," said Thompson. "The success of MAPS in bringing new jobs, private investments throughout the city and improving the quality of life for all citizens of Oklahoma City is unquestionable. The time is now to reinvest in our city's future."
If approved by Oklahoma City voters on Dec. 8, the temporary tax will begin on April 1, 2010 and raise $777 million. It will last for seven years. The penny sales tax maintains the current Oklahoma City sales tax rate, replacing the arena improvement collection.
