Bennett: Working on a better way in criminal justice

A recent series of articles in The Oklahoman on Oklahoma County's criminal justice system provided yet another view into the deficiencies of our system. I applaud the newspaper for its commitment to covering this issue.

The Greater Oklahoma City Chamber's Criminal Justice Task Force has received an overwhelming response from across the community about the work we are undertaking. It has become clear that this movement for reform is strong and there is a groundswell of support for these changes. Reform of Oklahoma County's system is largely aimed at those individuals being held pretrial and without a conviction. Intervention at this stage, particularly for those with mental illness or addiction, will not only change these people individually, but making these changes will positively change our community's health and well-being.

The work of the task force and its members is gaining momentum. We can report real progress:
