Friday, March 16, 2012

OKLAHOMA CITY Several attorneys from Doerner, Saunders, Daniel & Anderson, L.L.P., will offer advice to employers, human resources professionals and in-house counsel Thursday, April 5, at an employment law seminar, "Get it Right in 2012," hosted by the law firm at the Sheraton Midwest City Hotel at 5750 Will Rogers Road.

The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Cost to attend is $100 and includes continental breakfast and lunch. For more information or a registration form, contact Ronda Sturdivan at rsturdivan@dsda.com.

"This seminar is an opportunity for our attorneys to share their knowledge and expertise in the complicated area of employment law with business leaders in the community," said William F. Riggs, Managing Partner at Doerner Saunders. "We carefully crafted the programming based on some of the topics we feel are most relevant to today's employers."

Doerner Saunders Associate Courtney Bru will present "Wage and Hour Law: Common Mistakes and Potential New Ones," which will focus on mistakes commonly made by employers, including application of various exemptions, deductions from pay for inclement weather and other reasons, and changes to employee work schedules. Attendees will work through common scenarios to perfect application of Department of Labor regulations governing these topics. The program also will contain an overview of 2011 developments affecting employers and a forecast of potential developments in 2012.

Partner Rebecca M. Fowler will discuss "Non-competition (or Should We Say Non-solicitation) and Arbitration Agreements in Oklahoma." This presentation will cover limitations on the use of non-compete agreements in Oklahoma and recent case law that underscores the importance of careful drafting, followed by a discussion on the advantages of arbitration agreements with employees.

Partners Linda C. Martin and Michael C. Wofford and Associate Kenneth T. Short will emphasize employee compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations among all industries in "Environmental and OSHA law for the HR Professional." The panel will discuss actions companies can take to have employees implement and carry out environmental and safety compliance policies and systems, or to improve upon the systems they may already have in place.

Tod J. Barrett, Of Counsel, will present "Recent Changes to Oklahoma Anti-Discrimination Laws and What's Coming up this Legislative Session." He will discuss recent changes to the Oklahoma Anti-Discrimination Act, which went into effect in November. Barrett will share the law's impact on all Oklahoma employers, its constitutional challenges, and its impact on the Oklahoma Human Rights Commission and the Attorney General's office. He also will discuss potential amendments to the legislation.

Partner Kristen L. Brightmire will help employers navigate employee injuries and disabilities with a presentation called, "Help in Complying with the ADA, the FMLA, Workers Comp and Drug/Alcohol Testing Laws It's a Journey, not a Destination." She will help companies identify the competing laws, including their definitions and requirements, relevant to employees' medical issues. Attendees will work through several scenarios with Brightmire to identify opportunities and pitfalls.
